Songs We Sing - Matt Costa

We have got no dough at all
got a jar full of pennies
that don't amount to any
thing, thing, thing

these are the melodies
with simple harmonies we sing
we sing of the hardship life brings
it brings, it brings, it brings, it brings

these are the songs that we sing
we sing
these are the songs that i sing
we sing
these are the songs that we sing
we sing
these are the songs that i sing
to make the day better

and we have got no home at all
travel like gypsies living off any
thing, thing, thing

these are the melodies
with simple harmonies we sing
we sing of the hardship life brings
it brings, it brings, it brings, it brings

(chorus)

we sing, we sing, we sing, we sing

(chorus)

This song reminds me of the anthem the animals sang in 1984. It has a catchy tune that you find yourself humming long after you hear it.
In the novel, the anthem inspired the animals to keep working because, even though things weren't perfect, they were bound to get better. The song inspired hope in the animals. It describes something they all have in common: they are being worked with little benefit for themselves. Even the song provides hope and a goal for the animals.

Songs We Sing does similar things. It acknowledges that we're working hard and don't have a lot to show for it, but that doesn't mean we have to be miserable all of the time. The song creates a sense of camaraderie to make things better.
